Desert Locust monitoring and forecasting No.13 2020 - 11 - 11

From September to October 2020, desert locusts in Ethiopia were mainly distributed along the western and eastern edges of the northern Rift Valley, and newly harmed about 1544.0 thousand hectares of vegetation area, including 488.2 thousand hectares of cropland, 410.3 thousand hectares of grassland, and 645.5 thousand hectares of the shrub.

From July to the end of September 2020, Desert Locust in Somalia harmed about 1266.1 thousand hectares of vegetation area, including 2.9 thousand hectares of cropland, 189.1 thousand hectares of grassland, and 1074.1 thousand hectares of shrub. Desert Locust in Yemen harmed about 1157.1 thousand hectares of vegetation area, including 270.7 thousand hectares of cropland, 123.2 thousand hectares of grassland, and 763.2 thousand hectares of shrub.

The desert locusts are mainly distributed in the spring breeding areas of Indo-Pakistan border, the west of Pakistan, the coastal and inland areas of the Arabian Peninsula, southern Ethiopia and most of Kenya at the moment, and has begun to move to central Sudan, Indo-Pakistan border and the countries of West Africa to start Summer breeding.

From March to mid-May 2020, Desert Locust in Kenya harmed about 3359.2 thousand hectares of vegetation area (including 864.6 thousand hectares of cropland, 1393.8 thousand hectares of grassland and 1100.8 thousand hectares of shrub), mainly distributed in Rift Valley Province and Eastern Province, while Central, Coastal, Northeastern, Western and Nyanza Provinces were less affected.
